Born and educated in New York, Josie Spencer studied sculpture in Florence, at the Academia della Sculptura with Antonio Berti. At Sarah Lawrence College, New York, Josie studied sculpture with Ezio Martinelli and art history with William Rubin, Curator of the Museum of Modern Art.

Josie then furthered her knowledge of sculpture and antiquities in Greece, Turkey, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, India and the former USSR.

Before becoming a student at the New York Studio School for Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, she studied anatomy and drawing at the Art Students League. Josie later became a Board Member and Vice-Chair of The New York Studio School.

In the seven years before leaving New York for London, she exhibited at a number of group and one-person shows in New York at galleries in Soho and Chelsea. Josie works in her own West London studio.

SHORT_FILM

The following is a short 8 minute film about the making of a life sized bronze figure called 'Homage to Prisoners of War' which was
on exhibition in London's Golden Square for just over 3 years at the kind invitation of Westminster City Council. This film shows the process of making a bronze sculpture from the moulding of the finished clay figure in the studio to the foundry where the process of creating the final figure
takes place and its eventual placement in Golden Square.

I used to work with models much of the time. Now I only work with them very occasionally. My ideas for figures make it impossible for a person to hold a pose. I find I prefer the freedom that this gives. As I finish a piece, I may work with a model for a few days to make the figure individual rather than generic. My studio has become a even more private place to work and reflect.
